Welcome to the Aromatherapy Database website

This website is dedicated to the world of essential oils and aromatherapy, being the repository of information concerning thousands of published articles about how essential oils exert their effects, providing a sound, scientific knowledge base for the practice of aromatherapy.

A little history...

The Aromatherapy Database has been in existence for over 25 years. When it first started, the internet was in it's infancy and hundreds of hours were spent in National Library archives looking for relevant papers.  At that point in time, the practice of aromatherapy was largely based on empirical knowledge, simply because research into the biological activity of essential oils was scarce and difficult to source. The Database was published in a folder-based, printed format and update pages were regularly posted to subscribers all over the world. Over time, the database grew too large and the move to a simple, internet-based format was made.

The present...

How things have changed. The amount of published essential oil research has increased phenomenally in recent years and access to that research has grown too, mainly due to the rise of public databases such as PubMed. So you may think that the Aromatherapy Database is now irrelevant? Not true! This is because the Database has evolved with time and now offers much more to the subscriber than can be gained from other research sources. Not only have we already found the articles and put their information into one place, we have the full text of every paper on file that we can use to answer your queries. Don't count on the abstracts to provide all the information, count on the resources of the Aromatherapy Database.

Read 'Introduction to the database' and find out what we can do for you.
